If the auctioneer does not play a second painting, the next player in turn
order has the option of playing a second painting, in which case he or
she conducts the entire auction and receives the entirety of the payment.
The Mayfair version of the game published in the United States
modified the German rules so that when a player completes a double
auction card played by another player, the sale price is divided
between each player who played a card. The original German rules
(which I prefer) have the entirety of the sale price going to the
player who plays the SECOND card. This is the way the rules are
implemented in the game. This does not eliminate any logic to
playing a double auction card by itself; it just makes it a rarer
move. Double auction cards make your hand lucrative but also
make your hand more dangerous by giving you fewer options. This
balances the game.
