On the left is my 92 year old great aunt. She has late Alzheimer and doesn't really understand the concept of time anymore. She looks at me and knows I'm important, but really doesn't know my name or how I relate to her. She thinks my mother (on the right) is her sister who passed away a number of years back.
And yet... She knows the rules to dominoes perfectly. Its really the one thing that we can do with her that gives her pleasure.
Just goes to show you how deeply ingrained Dominoes is to Puerto Rican culture. And how wonderful board games are.

My wife's mother is 84 and is in the very early stages of Alzheimer's but otherwise in excellent health. She gets names of her children and grand children mixed up on occasion and she is starting to do crazy things like use hair spray as shampoo. We tried to teach her dominoes a couple weeks ago, but she just couldn't grasp it. She kept wanting to put tiles down parallel to other tiles even if only one of the sides matched.
Bridge and rummy on the other hand... she has played those games since she was a young child and can still play both exceptionally well. I have a feeling that bridge will be the very last thing she ever forgets.
