背景：
1941年1月，苏军开始的扫荡第聂伯河西岸的德军——乌克兰第1方面军在基辅附近建立了桥头堡；乌克兰第2方面军在南部准备发动攻势，夺取基洛沃格勒。苏军在德军第4装甲集团军和第8集团军之间打开了一个巨大的缺口。鉴于此态势，德军调集第1装甲集团军火线救援，来挡住直扑乌曼的苏军。
