I really find the game quite frustrating. Hard to deal with this on first turn as US: Soviets headline suez, he then drops 4 control on Israel with Red Scare, I have: fidel, nasser, blockade, Romanian abdication, decolonization, a captured nazi scientist and olympic games. Four 1's and three 2's. What do you do? He throws out Socialist Governments eliminating US influence in Italy and taking down Britain. Eventually I have to play blockade wiping out the west germans, the Fidel/decolonization events has him spreading communism all over the map, I get dinged by the Europe scoring card now when I have no control in germany or britain...next I get dinged by the mideast scoring card...I just took my last 3 cards and went to defcon one.

A horrible hand, just try to survive & hopefully things will turn. Here are some specific playing points for that hand:
Your hold card s/b Blockade - next turn it can help you chuck a Sov 3-val w/o having to Space it, thus essentially giving you 1 more ops & removing the blockade threat. Hard to remember to protect against this nasty card so it'll be nice to get it out of the deck. Him having played Scare means it will be in the reshuffle on turn 3. You'll end turn 2 with no held cards from playing Blockade. This gives you one more chance of getting Purge to whack him with.
Socialists should not have been able to eliminate the fellows in Italy. You should play with a slight bid giving the US more influence. Then you could put at least 3 in Italy & 1 adjacent, or possibly 4 in Italy. Also, if he plays Socialists as his 1st card of turn 1, then you can pressure him by playing Fidel to put say 1 in Afghan and 1 in Italy. The 1 in Afghan protects you from the loss of Iran via a coup. Or concede Italy & Europe and put 2 in Afgan is actually a better move. Much of this game is knowing when to cut your losses and move on. The Iran/Afghan/Pak triangle is a critical region in the game.
I'm 50/50 in games on playing Fidel as US or spacing it. Here it is only one of two playable 2-vals in your hand so use it right away on the above move. By playing Fidel now, maybe he has CIA and will be forced to play it before defcon gets to 2.
At some point in the hand you can play Nasser for the event and then use the 1 ops to coup it right back. A 4-6 roll will have an effect. A 6 make you look like a genius. A 1-3 lowers defcon so you can spread towards Thailand w/o him couping you to get into the region. You have Decol so he can only get there with Vietnam & DeStalin. If he has DeStalin, possibly making him "waste" a DeStalin point in SE Asia is a good thing. DeStalin is the strongest card in the deck after Purge/Scare in my opinion.
Nazis & Olympics s/b both played as Ops. When defcon gets to 3 spread towards Thailand & take it. Also you could use ops to put guys in Italy if the Sovs don't take it. Which you do depends on his specific move order, but probably he takes Italy on you & scores Europe so you spread in Asia
Normally I'd hold Decol until turn 3 so it can't get back into the reshuffle. However, you need to hold Blockade so you'll have to space Decol. Be thankful you got this immensely powerful card instead of him, you want to get both this card & DeStalin to deny them to the Evil Sovs
4 in Israel with Scare is not a great move by the Sovs btw. If they are "scared" to headline event this on you due to Defectors then they should either keep it as their held card until turn 3 simply so you can't get it on the reshuffle, or they should use its ops to coup Iran if they don't have another 4-val. A 3-val coup on Iran of course is also probably a good enough play by the Sovs so they can hold Purge
If the Sovs take Italy with their 2nd play then the US needs to do the Nasser event & coup as their 2nd play to take defcon to 4 to prevent a realignment on W. Germany. Or better yet, simply coup Italy with the Olympics card.
The US is actually not so bad off this turn as one would think. The Sovs have 2 score cards, and so while they can time them to get ahead on VPs, on the other hand they'll now have only 3 cards to play for ops in rounds 2-6. Maybe they'll need/want to space a card making it even less ops. So, the end result position-wise at turn end will probably not be horrible for the US. The US won't know this ahead of time of course. Anyway, the result is on turns 2-3 the US will likely get a push in Asia Scoring at least, if not even taking it to offset Europe Scoring
There are tons of very highly skilled TS players, perhaps more so than in many other games. They'd likely give somewhat similar advice.

1 SPA/POR, 5 ITA, 1 GRE. Forget about W Germany. Now you can play Blockade and not give up any cards (= Save Decol). If your opponent had played Red Scare as an event to that hand, you would have been in deeper hi than you can imagine, since you would have been forced to play either Decol or Blockade (without card to give).
