Phase 5b – Combat
A player is never forced to attack. However, players mustdefend themselves as long as they have blue cards in their hands.
A player may never attack a neutral town (a town withoutan occupant). These towns may only be taken by expansion. Players may onlyattack towns belonging to other players. To launch an attack, a player must have at least 2 bluebattle cards (or Condottiere cards – see Redcards played during a battle). He must also own a territory that isconnected to the territory that he is attacking (either by a road or by aport). A coastal town which has a port can launch a naval attackagainst any other occupied port on the map.
The order of combat is as follows:
·
Declarationof Combat
The attacking player names thetown which is attacking, and the town being attacked. A player may only launch oneattack per game turn from each town. A town may only be attackedonce per game turn by the same player. A town that has been conqueredthis turn may not be used to launch an attack. Towns gained during the 1st
expansion of the current turn's expansionphase are exempt from this rule.
·
TheBattle
The two players select thebattle cards from their hands that they would like to commit to this battle. The attacker places his cards face down in front of him. The defender now doesthe same.
The attacker chooses 2 bluecards, and may also add one red battle card (Engineer, Traitor, etc).
From his hand, the defenderchooses one blue card and may, just like the attacker, also play one red battlecard (Engineer, Traitor, etc).
Each of the players rolls adie, and the two players simultaneously reveal their cards. The Combat Valuesof the two players are now calculated.
·
Theattacker adds the CP from his cards and the result of his die roll. ·
Thedefender adds the CP from his cards, the CP from the fortification level of thetown under attack (which may have been modified by red cards played by eitherside), and the result of his die roll.
A player who is defending a town in a mountainous regionor in marshland receives a bonus of 1 CP. A town situated in a mountainousregion or in marshland whose fortification level has been reduced to zero (notcounting the cards or the die roll), because of a Traitor or Engineer card, keeps this 1 CP bonus.
A player who is defending against a naval attack receivesa landing bonus of 1 CP. A town which is under naval attack whose fortificationlevel has been reduced to zero (not counting the cards or the die roll),because of a Traitor or Engineer card, keeps this landing bonus. These bonuses are cumulative.
After seeing the result, the players may want to play one or more red cards (Retreat or Signof God).
If the defender has no blue cards with which to defend, hejust adds the fortification level of his town to the result of his die roll andany terrain bonuses his town may have (landing, mountain and marshland). Only the defending town can be captured during a battle. The town that launched the attack may never be captured, whatever the result ofthe battle.
Result of the Combat
The player with the highest total CP is the winner of thebattle: He takes possession of the town, along with any accompanyingfortifications. Fortifications are never destroyed in a battle. The red cards played by the two players are discarded.
If the attacker has won the combat, he keeps the bluecards that he used during the battle; however he may not use them in anotherattack this turn. He places them face-up in front of him and may only take themback into his hand (for defending purposes) after he has finished all of hisattacks. This means that it is possible that the other players will see all ofthe attacking player’s cards.
If the defender has won the combat, he gets to keep theblue card that he used in the battle, and immediately returns it to his hand.He may play this card again in defense as many times as he needs it (as long ashe doesn’t lose it). He can also use this blue card in an attack when it is histurn.
The loser of the combat (attacker or defender) mustimmediately discard all of the cards he has used in the battle.
In case of a tie, the defender wins the combat but bothplayers immediately discard all of the cards that they played in the battle. The defender keeps his town.
Don’t Forget: Cards are used fordefending as well as attacking. Avoid losing too many of your cards whileattacking; otherwise you may not have enough to defend yourself later in theturn!
A player who does not want to (or cannot) make any moreattacks ends his turn.
Once the last player has finished his turn, all of thecards in players’ hands are discarded and shuffled together with the remainingcards to form a new deck for the next game turn.
